Field Preparations and Christening

The First Plants Arrive

The first load of lavender stock arrives at the farm.

Burning Midnight Oil

We worked into the wee hours moving the new stock to the protected nursery area, safe from the "critters".

A Family Affair

Everyone pitched in to move the lavender stock to their new winter home.

Discing the Field

The tractor works the soil, making it habitable for the new lavender plants.

Get Used to It!

The new plants must gradually get used to their new environment. Here they are sunning themselves next to their new home.

The Invocation

Planting begins with a blessing for the baby plants in their new home reminding us that we are connected to the soil.

The Lone Planter

Long after the help go home, John works to put the baby plants to bed.

Arrival of Carmel Lavender Bees

The New Bees Arrive

Arriving via U.S. Mail, the news bees crawl on the screen of their cage. They are eager to get to their new home, and they are HUNGRY!

Home Sweet Home

The bees check out their new abode.

At the Edge

Living on the edge of the Lavender field, the bees are able to easily access the lavender and the sweet pollen on the buds.

Harvest Time

Newly Planted

The new plants are quite small when they are first planted.

Butterfly Visit

One fine Spring day, a swarm of butterflies paid the field a visit. Here is a photo of one of them sitting between the lavender plants.

New Buds Form

Before too long, the plants are throwing new buds. Here is a picture before they burst to color.

Bumbles and Lavender

The bumbles absolutly LOVE lavender. They would work the fields all day. The smell was so intoxicating to them, they would forget to go home at night, and fall "asleep" right on the bud until the next day.

Color Purple

As the buds break, the hill comes alive with a purple haze of lavender.

Cutting the Flowers

Flowers are cut and tied in the field, ready for drying.

The Bounty

A nice load of lavender waits for the journey to the drying barn.
