Our Story

Steinbeck knew of this place. So remarkable it is, that he commented in his now famous "East of Eden":

When the Spaniards came, they had to give everything they saw a name... the suggestions sometimes came from the nature of the place itself: Tassajara, a cup and saucer....

- John Steinbeck, East of Eden

For our family, Tassajara is a cup of tranquility and health. You can feel the spirit drinking when you sit on the warm hillside and look out over the Santa Lucia mountains.

At some point, I don't know when, we planted a single lavender plant in front of the house to add a touch of color to the naturally dry summer landscape. The lavender flourished. It thrived on the dry climate, the sweet well water, and the mostly barren soil. Most importantly, when pruned, it released a wonderfully intense and intoxicating fragrance that seemed to be a physical embodiment of the tranquil energy that permeates Tassajara. This was the start of our lavender journey.

For years we lived lavender. We read about it. The different varieties and uses. How angustifolias have the most coveted aromas for perfumes, a scent of enchanting sophistication. How x Intermedias are the most widely cultivated in France, and produce the best oils. Best of all, we got to know lavender people. They are happy people. Friendly people. People who love the plant and love talking about their obsession. We even ate lavender. We ate it regularly. We cooked pizzas with lavender, baked breads and cookies with lavender, roasted lamb rubbed in lavender.

When our relationship with lavender had blossomed, we started to plant.
